Have an Idea
One of the primary concerns for a writer is their narrative concept and the idea behind it. If they feel like they have a unique idea, they need to find a way to make their story relatable and believable. If a story is without a concept or plot, it will be strewn with loopholes that will frustrate the writer in later chapters of the novel, and eventually, contradictions in the premise will cause the story to lose all credibility and meaning.
Proper research is the Key
Once the writer has done their research and they have conceptualized the momentum they plan for their story, they have to build characters that add purpose to the story and one another. There is always a hidden message beneath the story, and all the action takes place to connect all the dots as the story develops. No action, dialogue, or occurrence is ever gratuitous. For a writer historically accurate and statistically sound reports in their writing illustrates accurate research, giving the reader a chance to connect with the story. Once a writer has researched the facts needed to support each important facet of the story, the writer will devise what is known as the 3-act structure of the story.
3 Act Structure
Every story can be divided into 3 discernable stages, the 1st stage is the introduction, where we are likely to meet most of the main characters in the story. We are given a taste of the concept or the plot, and we are given some context. Conflicts, loyalties relations and intentions are introduced. During the 1st act typically includes a significant incident which serves to move the plot to the 2nd act. In act 2, the main characters seek solutions to issues they are confronted with. During this phase further characters are introduced. The writer may also explore locations or introduce crucial elements that may prove to be the solution to the story’s mystery. During the 2nd act, the story scales the hill to the summit which comprises the final phase, The 3rd act sees the final unraveling of the mystery and the finale the writer was building up to, is revealed. Finally, the solution to the mystery is revealed and the story comes to the end envisaged by the author.
Character Building
This tends to be a very important element to thrillers. A capturing story inevitably sees the gradual introduction and development of characters. The careful description of physical features such as hair- and eye color, build, age and similar traits serve to present an image of the character in a reader’s mind. Elaboration of the psychological, spiritual, and cultural traits serve to give a more relatable and dimension to a character. Further details such as skills, aptitudes, hobbies, sense of humor and unique personality traits finally further aid in bringing a character to life for the reader. Once the character is introduced, its relationships with other characters, the role they play and their purpose in the story is pursued.
